Living in the World of Autism – A Journey of Love, Patience, and Understanding!

This is Gogo. He’s 22 years old, autistic, and since meeting him, my life has completely changed. I now share my everyday life with Gogo, the eldest of my partner Boryana’s three children. Through him, I’ve discovered a world with different rules and norms—filled with unique challenges, but also immense beauty and authenticity.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. But each autistic person is unique, and Gogo has taught me that deeply. He communicates literally and directly, which has made me reconsider how I express myself—clarity and honesty are key.

Every day with Gogo is a lesson. I’ve learned to let go of my own logic and meet him where he is. His world doesn’t always follow our clocks or routines, but in our mutual adaptation, magic happens. He teaches me patience, acceptance, and how to slow down and notice the small things—a beam of sunlight, a specific scent, a texture.

Autism also comes with challenges. Gogo needs structure to feel secure, and disruptions can be difficult. In Bulgaria, support for autistic individuals is limited, and stigma still surrounds these diagnoses. Many families are left without the help they need.

The future is a concern—autism doesn’t disappear with age, and society isn’t always adapted for adults with special needs. It's our responsibility to prepare Gogo for a world that isn’t always understanding. Still, it’s a privilege to walk this journey with him.

Every small victory is a celebration—a new skill, a conquered challenge. They reaffirm that love, patience, and acceptance are the most important things we can offer. Gogo helps me grow. Through him, I strive to become a more empathetic and aware version of myself.

This journey is far from over. Every day with Gogo brings new discoveries, challenges, and joys. I’ve been given the honor of seeing the world through his eyes—and it’s a world I’m grateful to be part of.
